CSLA/CSLA partnered with CafePress (https://www.cafepress.com/) to sell school library-related merchandise. Several children’s illustrators have donated their artwork to use on these items, and part of the proceeds go to CSLF, which supports school libraries and their workers.
Each month CSLF has been featuring one of these generous illustrators. This month that artist is Nancy Hayashi, who has illustrated seven picture books – plus wrote three of her own books. Bunny Bungalow was the Oppenheim toy Portfolio God Award; Wanda’s Monster and What Did You Do Today? won Cooperative Children’s Book Center’s Choice awards.
Nancy was born in 1939 in Bucyrus, Ohio, and attended the Cleveland Art Institute. She began her career as a department store layout artist, and then became an art director at two advertising agencies. Since 1978 Nancy has worked as a freelance writer and illustrator. She now lives in the greater Los Angeles area and is a member of the Southern California Council on Literature for Children and Young People. Nancy married Tom Hayashi, a computer field engineer in 1969, and they have two sons: Brian and David. Her hobbies include reading, hiking, camping, and travel.
