Displays - January 27 is Holocaust Remembrance Day

"The United Nations General Assembly designated January 27—the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau—as International Holocaust Remembrance Day." (United States Holocaust Memorial Museum)

Each year when the 8th graders read the Diary of Anne Frank Play version in their textbook, I make a display of Holocaust Nonfiction and Fiction. You may also use these displays any time of year your school studies World War II, either in their History classes or in their Language Arts Classes. Each month, I try and feature a nonfiction area of the library collection that pairs up with the curriculum.

Books about the Holocaust may appear in many areas of the Dewey Decimal System. Here are suggestions of Dewey numbers you might want to check for your display:

  • Make your own Dewey Categories with a Copy of this Template
  • Click HERE for more Displays by Dewey and to print this sign.

  • Print out Quotes from Anne Frank's Diary to add to your bulletin board.
  • Feature booktalks about the Holocaust (Booktalk provided by Scholastic Bookfairs).

  • Make Censored Poetry with pages from Anne's Diary. This is a book destined for weeding.  Photocopy pages if you don't want to destroy books.  Get the Instructions for Censored Poetry HERE.

  • Create a booklist of suggested reading.  Here's a Link to the Bookmark and Sign.

  • If your school teaches Night by Elie Wiesel, you may feature those books instead.
  • Link to Check Out SIGN
  • Night Connotation Lesson (High School)
You may also wish to follow up Holocaust Month with books about other Genocides throughout history:
