It's that time of the year when we are all inundated by appeals from various causes soliciting funds for everything from disaster relief to curing diseases, from fixing the environment to providing for the homeless. We will all agree that these are indeed worthy of our support and try to give to as many as we can with the limited funds we have. This year please consider a cause very close to our own lives, the California School Library Foundation.
The CSLF was incorporated several years ago when Penny Kastanis, a CSLA Past-President, was the executive director of CSLA. She and her husband realized that it was time to develop a foundation which could solicit and accept funds as a non-profit separate from the Association.
The Foundation's mission is "to offer state and regional scholarships and grants to encourage professional growth and support library services in educational settings, and carry on other charitable and educational activities associated with this goal."
To that end, CSLF administers the funds used in several awards and scholarships for members of the Association and its supporters. These awards include the Leadership for Diversity Scholarships and a scholarship honoring Earlene Billing and supporting a first-time attendee to CSLA's annual conference. The Foundation also supports on-going professional development for library support staff by offering the Educating our Communities grant.
Also, don’t forget about shopping for the holidays at the Library Advocacy Store (
https://www.cafepress.com/csla)! The Foundation receives a percentage of every purchase made. You can find a variety of stationary and gifts, with designs from a large number of children’s book illustrators. There are many options there for your holiday shopping.
