CSLF Highlights Illustrator Joe Cepeda

This month the California Library Foundation is proud to recognize Joe Cepeda, who is the illustrator of many awarding-winning picture books including Peeny Butter Fudge by Toni Morrison and Slade Morrison, What a Truly Cool World by Julius Lester, a Family Life Magazine Top 10 Best Books of the Year, a Family Fun Critic's Choice, and BCCB Blue Ribbon Book, Mice and Beans by Pam MuĂ‘oz Ryan, and Gracias the Thanksgiving Turkey by Joy Cowley which was an American Bookseller Pick of the Lists.

“Preferring grace over style, message over technique, and story over extravagance, Joe Cepeda seeks to create work with integrity and authenticity at its core. Born and raised in East Los Angeles, a proud Angeleno, Joe’s serpentine road through college began by studying engineering at Cornell and finished with a BFA in Illustration from Long Beach State. Only months from leaving school, Joe took his artwork to New York and secured a book contract after his first meeting with a publisher.  He’s been illustrating books ever since. His illustrations have appeared in publications such as The Los Angeles Times; Buzz, Inc. Magazine; and Latina Magazine.” (https://www.joecepeda.com/about)

Mr. Cepeda received the Recognition of Merit Award for 2000 from The George G. Stone Center for Children's Books for his work in illustrating more than thirty books for children.  A sought-after presenter to schools and conferences, Joe enjoys sharing his experiences and advocating for his craft. He also serves as the president of the Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles, SILA.
Joe has been very generous in sharing his experiences and craft with others. You can learn more about him by listening and viewing:
