Display Ideas for October

Did you know that October is Star Wars Reads Month? (click the link for the above image source).  Hop on over to the website to download some ADORABLE Star Wars posters and decorations featuring "the child."  If you have Star Wars books in your collection, now would be a great time to display them.  Or, you can always save these materials for a "May the 4th be with you" celebration, especially if you like displaying SCARY books in October.

If you missed BANNED BOOKS WEEK, you could continue the celebration of banned books through October with the headline:  THESE BOOKS ARE SCARY!

Each month, I feature a new genre on the display by the front door.  October is always scary stories month!  I love to get inspiration from  Tommy Kovac on his Smells Like Library Blog.  The skeleton and tombstone on this bulletin board were created by Tommy.

Just to make sure we are hitting an English Language Arts standard, I always include the genre in my displays.

It helps to have genre stickers so I can easily pull books for a display.  I use both Suspense and Horror labels from Demco to fill my display.

I know most of us are not open to the public, but you can still put up the displays and post them on your social media accounts.  If you are doing curbside check out, you can feature scary book talks in your classroom visits through zoom.

Here are some other October Themes to try:

  • Teen Read Week - now called "TeenTober" - “What’s your problem?” use problem novels or "edgy fiction"

  • Red Ribbon Week: Red Ribbon Reads (Junior High School) books on drugs, addiction, and alternatives to drug use such as volunteering an community service.

Ideas from Tommy Kovac, CSLA Southern Region 4  Representative
